The bridge at Cataract Falls in Cataract Falls State Recreation Area, in Owen County is a 140-foot bridge spanning Mill Creek and was built in 1876, according to the Indiana Historical Bureau.

The Smith truss bridge is one of the few remaining of its type in the country, officials said, and has been open only to pedestrians. In recent years, officials had discovered that the bridge was deteriorating, said Mike Montgomery, facility management specialist for the Department of Natural Resources.

The bridge was closed and then taken down to await rehabilitation, he said. The $410,257 project is to be completed by September.
